The ŠKODA Fabia R5 debuted in 2015 as ŠKODA Motorsport's replacement for their Fabia S2000.
The R5 was immediately successful in its debut season; Raimund Baumschlager won the Austrian Rally Championship, while Norbert Herczig did the same in Hungary and Freddy Loix in Belgium. Gustavo Saba claimed the championship in Paraguay too, whilst Jan Kopecký took top honours in ŠKODA’s home series, the Czech Rally Championship. The next two years saw even greater success, with ŠKODA works drivers Esapekka Lappi and Pontus Tidemand each claiming WRC 2 victory respectively in the 2016 and 2017 FIA World Rally Championships.
As with other R5 rally cars, the Fabia uses a production-based 1.6-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged engine. A 32 mm air restrictor results in performance outputs of 210 kW and 420 Nm. Power is transmitted to all four wheels through a 5-speed gearbox, with mechanical front and rear differentials.[1]
The Fabia R5 was updated to the FIA Rally2 group in 2019 to become the Fabia Rally2 evo. The engine is revised for greater performance (214 kW, 425 Nm) and more efficient cooling. The body is reinforced and suspension travel is increased to handle the most extreme conditions.[2]
