The BMW E30 M3 had great successes in various touring car championships such as the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft, British Touring Car Championship, European Touring Car Championship, Australian Touring Car Championship, as well as winning the World Touring Car Championship drivers' title in 1987. It also won multiple times in Guia Race, 24 Hours Nürburgring and Spa 24 Hours. The famous England-based motorsport engineering group, Prodrive prepared few rally racing examples of E30 M3 to contest several national championships and selected rounds of the World Rally Championship between 1987 and 1989. By the latter year, the M3s were equipped with 6-speed gearboxes and produced 295 bhp.
The E30 M3 was not as competitive with the 4WD cars on loose surfaces, but it excels on asphalt. Its most notable success was the victory on the Tour de Corse in 1987, driven by Bernard Beguin.
DiRT 3[]
“The BMW M3 Rally was not the most famous of rally vehicles, however, the Prodrive-tuned car was most effective. With its nimble chassis and robust engine, it was at its most successful on tarmac rally stages.”
