Codemasters has been developing and publishing the Colin McRae and DiRT racing games since 1998. While the early games focused primarily on the Rally discipline of racing, the DiRT Series started to take the series to other race formats. Gymkhana was introduced to mixed feelings and led to rally being overshadowed in DiRT 3. After DiRT 3, Codemasters decided to take a break from the series and until recently, did not release a new game. In the spring of 2015, Codemasters released an Early Access version of DiRT Rally on Steam and detailed plans for release on Xbox ONE and PS4.
