The BMW M1 Procar was originally conceived for the world of Group 4 sports car racing in the late 1970s, including the single-make M1 Procar Series. Following these circuit racing endeavours, a number of these cars were modified for stage rallying exploits, most notably by Oreca for the BMW France team and their drivers Bernard Darniche and Bernard Béguin.

For 1983, all Group 4 cars with an unexpired homologation could be applied for automatic Group B certification by the manufacturer, allowing the M1 to be competitively rallied until the demise of Group B in 1986. While Oreca and their M1 Rallye would contest national-level events in Europe to occasional success, its two World Rally Championship appearances at the 1982 and 1983 Tour de Course both ended in mechanical retirement, and the team cancelled the program after 1984.[1]
