In 2014, two-time Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) champion Mattias Ekström established his own rallycross team EKS to compete in FIA World Rallycross Championship and made the Audi S1 EKS RX quattro the vehicle of his choice. Powered by a modified 2-litre R4 TFSI engine found on the road-version of S1, it is capable of a power output of 560 horsepower with a 45mm restrictor installed. EKS also took cues from the Audi Sport quattro S1 E2 while designing the aerodynamics for the S1, resulting in boxier fenders which is a staple of its looks.
Eventually, Ekström won himself a driver's championship and EKS a team championship during the 2016 season with 4 wins and 2 podiums with his Audi S1, after a season-long battle with the then reigning champion Petter Solberg.
In 2018, the second-generation of S1 EKS RX was revealed, with permanent championship drivers Ekström and new signing Andreas Bakkerud. It featured a new rear wing and a revised cooling package, with the radiator ducts located at its roof and its rear quarter windows. EKS Audi would also enter a third 2018-specification car in the 2018 World RX of Latvia, driven by Nico Müller.
While Audi would abandon the series as a manufacturer at the end of 2018, the team's cars continued to be raced into 2019 by Monster Energy RX Cartel (a newly-formed outfit supported by EKS), with drivers Liam Doran and former EKS Audi Sport driver Bakkerud. The team quickly became fan-favourites with their social media presence and would end up reaching 3rd in the 2019 team championship. Bakkerud would tie Team Hansen MJP's Timmy Hansen (Peugeot 208 WRX) for 1st in the driver's standings, only losing out on countback owing to race wins.[1] In the same year, JC Raceteknik's Robin Larsson would win both the RallyX Nordic and FIA European Rallycross titles for Supercar in an ex-EKS Audi S1.[2]
