In order to defend Lancia's success in World Rally Championship the Lancia 037 earned in 1983, the more powerful variant Lancia 037 Evolution 2 was introduced. However, it was not enough as Lancia has lost two 1984 championships to Audi and again to the 4WD Peugeot 205 T16 in its final works season in 1985. Its sole and final victory was collected by Finnish rally driver, Markku Alen on the 1984 Tour De Corse, before it was finally replaced by Delta S4 in Martini Lancia's rally lineup.
