After the abolition of Group B cars from World Rally Championship, Lancia and other participating manufacturers were mandated to compete in Group A cars. The Lancia Delta HF is then put into competition by Lancia in 1987. Powering the Delta is a 1995cc Garrett turbocharged, front transversely mounted inline-4 engine, which makes it a more suitable Group A car than its rivals such as Mazda 323 and RWDs like BMW M3 E30 or Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500.
Despite of several technical shortcomings, it has proved itself as one of the most successful Group A car in the rally history. The Delta has won 46 WRC rally stages and six consecutive years of constructor's championship from 1987 to 1992, in addition to driver's championship title for Juha Kankkunen (1987 and 1991) and Miki Biasion (1988 and 1989).
