The Lancia Delta S4 was designed as a replacement to Lancia 037 Evo 2 in Group B rallying. It boasts a 1759.3 cc 4-cylinder twincharged engine capable of reducing turbo lag at low engine speeds. Officially, the S4 produced about 480 horsepower but there are sources claim that it's capable of reaching 560 horsepower. A test was carried out on the S4's engine under extreme conditions by Lancia engineers in 1985, it reached 5 bars boost, developing approximately 1000 horsepower.

Driven by Henri Toivonen in 1985 RAC Rally, the S4 won its first event and also carried Markku Alén to second in the drivers' championship the following year. It also scored 3 wins in 1986, the Monte Carlo Rally by Toivonen, Rally Argentina by Massimo Biasion and the Olympus Rally by Alén.

However, the legacy of S4 is tainted by the infamous 1986 Tour de Corse accident where both Toivonen and his co-driver Sergio Cresto lost their lives, this eventually became one of the last straw led to FIA's banning of Group B cars.

Colin McRae DiRT

“The Delta S4 had its moment in the sun when Group B shut down in the late Eighties. Today it's still unrivaled for power and torque, and it's got a short wheelbase to boot. It's like the Peugeot 205 for speed and aggression, so if you can crack this monster, you'll be unbeatable.”
Travis Pastrana

DiRT Rally 2.0

“Homologated in 1985, the Lancia Delta S4 featured a twin-charged power unit, making use of both a turbocharger and a supercharger to aid in acceleration. A Delta in name and body styling only, this car shared virtually nothing in terms of construction with its road car equivalent, not unlike the earlier Peugeot 206 T16. The Delta S4 was a bespoke Group B monster.”
