Based on the "B"-generation model, the Opel Ascona 400 succeeded the 16-valve Kadett GT/E. Originally homologated as a Group 4 rally car in 1979, the Ascona would later be transferred into the new-for-1982 Group B category. It would face stiff competition from Audi Sport and their 4WD quattro, with Opel falling short of a manufacturer's championship, but it would gift Walter Röhrl his second driver's championship. This would be the final time a driver won the WRC in a rear-wheel drive car.
