Derived from the road version of the Peugeot 405 and the 1988 rally raid version of 205 T16, the Peugeot 405 Turbo 16 was built in 1988 by Peugeot Talbot Sport. Unlike its road-going variant, the 405 T16 was built in a coupe body style in mid-engine configuration and the engine sat very low in front of the right rear wheel with the turbocharger on the opposite side. It has a constant four wheel drive with electronically adjustable center differential, which also found on the 205 T16. It also features four wheel steering, which is rare for a rally or a hillclimb car. The 405 T16 had a very good power-to-weight ratio with more than 600 horsepower for a car weighing barely 900 kilograms and could accelerate from zero to 200 km/h in less than 10 seconds. Peugeot invested a $1 million-plus budget for the construction of this car.

Driven by legendary Finnish rally driver, Ari Vatanen in the same year, the 405 T16 won the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with a record-breaking time of 10:47:77. It also won three Paris-Dakar rallies from 1988 to 1990.

Colin McRae DiRT[]

“The 405 was king of the mountains in the late 80s. Nowadays, it lacks a bit of horsepower, but it's very light, so it doesn't cause too much of a problem. It's a long car though, so you have to be careful on tight bends; you don't want to lose your spoiler half way up the mountain.”
Travis Pastrana, Colin McRae DiRT
