The Renault 5 Maxi Turbo was developed in 1984 by Renault Sport to take advantage of the Group B regulation's "evolution" feature, allowing for even greater modifications to the existing Renault 5 Turbo. The Maxi features wider tyres, a wider track, and improved aerodynamics. Alongside these, engine displacement was increased to 1,527 cc, and the team's Formula 1-derived "DPV" anti-lag system was introduced. This allowed the new C7K engine to produce 360 bhp.

While the rear wheel drive Renault was not competitive on loose surfaces, it excelled in tarmac rallies, with Jean Ragnotti famously winning the 1985 Tour de Course against far more powerful competitors.[1]
