During its time in competition, the Volkswagen Beetle became the most successful rallycross car in North America, winning 29 of 52 races it entered and claiming 60 podiums in Global Rallycross, Americas Rallycross, X Games and Nitro Rallycross. The cars were ran by Andretti Autosport for drivers Tanner Foust, Scott Speed, and later Cabot Bigham (following Speed's departure for Subaru). The car's success on-track was converted into five driver's titles in a row for Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross, with Speed taking four (2015-2018) and Foust one (2019).[1]

The Beetle was developed from the ground-up for rallycross by Seat Sport, before the project was taken in-house to Volkswagen's motorsport base in Germany. At its launch in the second half of the 2014 Global Rallycross series, the Beetle used a WRC-derived 1.6-litre engine, a powerplant that was replaced midway through the 2015 season with a dedicated 2.0-litre unit; this engine was later used in the World Championship-winning Volkswagen Polo R Supercar.[2][3]
