In their effort for 2017 World Rallycross Championship season, 2-times World RX champion Petter Solberg joint forces with 2016 runner-up Johan Kristoffersson, forming PSRX Volkswagen Sweden in a collaboration with Volkswagen Motorsport, thus led to the creation of the Volkswagen Polo GTI Supercar. Built upon a 2014 Volkswagen Polo R WRC chassis, the Polo GTI Supercar has undergone several modifications to make it viable for rallycross. Another notable aspect of the Polo GTI is its tradition-breaking front- mounted radiator, which is rare in the high-level rallycross competition due to its close contact nature.

The Polo GTI eventually will become one of the most successful car of the 2017 season, with Solberg and Kristoffersson taking 1 and 7 wins respectively and winning the latter 2017 driver's championship title and the team championship for PSRX VW Sweden.

In 2018, the Polo was rebranded as Volkswagen Polo R WRX Supercar and received several upgrades, including a new rear wing and revised air intakes in the front bumper ahead of the 2018 World RX season.
